Aaron Antonovsky's insight on observing Holocaust survivors. An interview I gave to the Sacramento Bee was published this morning. I was asked about the escape of Amanda Berry with her child, and the rescue of two other women after years being caged in a house in Cleveland by a sadist. When interviewed, I discussed an observation about Holocaust survivors that was made by the late Aaron Antonovsky, an American-born medical sociologist (doctorate from Yale) who made his career at the Israel

Antonovsky was born in the United States in 1923. After completing his PhD at Yale University, he emigrated to Israel in 1960. The concept of sense of coherence (SOC) was put forward by Aaron Antonovsky in 1979 to explain why some people become ill under stress and others stay healthy. It arose from the salutogenic Abstract. Aaron Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence (SOC), as a stable disposition of personality that serves as a major coping resource for the preservation of health, has been widely used in many studies. However, few empirical studies are conducted on the concept of SOC. The aim of this study was first to analyze the stability of Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence (SOC) as a measure of a person's world view over time; secondly, to investigate its relationship with depression and anxiety. Aaron Antonovsky was a medical sociologist who named and developed the “SOC” concept as part of his research on the topic of health, stress and coping.

SOC seems to be a health promoting resource, which strengthens resilience and develops a positive subjective state of health. Salutogenesis is a valuable approach for health promotion and would be worth to implement in practice much more than to date.

Design: The study is descriptive and analytical with a systematic integration of the contemporary knowledge base on the salutogenic research published 1992–2003. The review includes 458 scientific publications and 13 doctoral theses. More than 20 years have passed since the American-Israeli medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky introduced his salutogenic theory “sense of coherence” as a global orientation to view the world and the individual environment as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful, claiming that the way people view their life has a positive influence on their health. 1 Over the first 10 years after the introduction of the salutogenesis Antonovsky developed the life orientation questionnaire, sense of Aaron Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence (SOC), as a stable disposition of personality that serves as a major coping resource for the preservation of health, has been widely used in many studies. We examined the stability of SOC and th … In a previous paper, we argued that the original 29-item sense of coherence (SOC) scale developed by Aaron Antonovsky (1923–1994) was insufficient according to its reflection of SOC. The purpose of this study was to create a new version of the original 29-item SOC scale in order to test his hypothesis of a causal link between SOC and physical greater variety of GRRs at their disposal.4 Antonovsky emphasises that the SOC concept is a dispositional orienta-tion rather than a personality trait/type or a coping strategy.45 The SOC construct reflects a person’s capacity to respond to stressful situations.
