The aim of the course “Advanced Optics and Lasers” is to give students knowledge on techniques for creating and manipulating laser light and laser pulses This course provides both theoretical and hands on experience of lasers and non-linear optics. It goes from the basics to the research front within some aspects of the physics of lasers.

The Laser Physics and Nonlinear Optics group (LPNO) explores the physics and technology of lasers, nonlinear optical processes and processing of optical information. Emphasis is put on nanophotonic approaches, to control the generation of light to its extremes and to explore novel ways for linear and nonlinear optical processing.

This textbook originates from a lecture course in laser physics at the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). As such, the course provides a physical basis for further study in optics and photonics, and application of lasers in various areas of life, science and industry. One focus of laser physics and quantum optics is therefore the theoretical investigation of the nonlinear properties of the quantum vacuum in ultra-intensive laser light. The theoretical foundations include relativistic quantum many-particle systems and relativistic quantum transport.
